Twittered up!

My twitter name is @LoriHorner.  I guess that's what it is anyway.  I have to be honest, I'm less than thrilled with it at this point.  I've read through the handbook, set up my account and watched countless videos.  I've even tweeted 4 times but I'm still feeling like I don't like it.  I have found people to follow that have similar interests and I downloaded tweetdeck. (another confusing feature) and attached bitly to help me shorten addresses.  I'm really hoping this will change over the next few weeks.  I feel like I just randomly click on the tweets to see where it takes me.  The language might as well be Swahili for all I understand.  Maybe I'm missing something here.  Someone tell me they feel the same way or maybe give me some tips.  I'm twittered up!

  1. Lori, I think I am in a similar boat. I see the potential, but I am feeling a bit overwhelmed also. You are not alone!
I think the benefit will come when we have an issue or want to discuss a topic with like-minded people. Having a network of educators available with just a click of a button is a great tool. Of course, that network has to be built first. My only tip is the one I keep repeating to myself....Patience...good things take time!

  2. Hi Lori-

The main reason I am enjoying Twitter right now is that I am on Spring Break and have the time to give it more attention. I can see how it can be confusing though, with all of that information constantly streaming.

By the way...where did you find the little fish on your sidebar that track the mouse? Fun!

    1. Spring Break! That's good. You can actually feed those little fish! Just click and it will drop food. All the fish will scramble to get it. :) Widgets (little fish) can be added in the layout section of your blog. On the top right of your blog you will see "design". Click on that and it will take you to the design page of your blog. Just find "Layout" on the left side of the column, click on that and it will show you how your page is layed out. Just click on "add a widget" and an option window will let you choose what you want to add. Just be sure to save it after you add it.

    2. Thanks, Lori! I didn't know you could feed them too :)

  3. I have used twitter for a couple of years just to stay connected with some of my friends but trying to find random people to connect with feels a little strange. Maybe, it is because I am not used to using Twitter in this way but I feel a little like a stalker when I follow people I don't know. I hope it gets better but I am not much of a fan of Twitter to connect with people I don't know.

  4. Hang in there. Let's see how you feel about Twitter towards the end of this course. I haven't been Tweeting much this week because I've been on Spring Break and have been taking a break from my computer. :) Make sure you follow people that have the same interests as you or teach the same thing. I'll list some of my favorite Tweeters in the info for next week.

Darin - LOL! Don't feel like a stalker.....Facebook is much more personal than Twitter and you know all your friends on Facebook, but it is normal not to know all the people you follow on Twitter.

  5. Lori,
I'm a librarian, and I have found a lot of authors, publishing companies, and libraries to follow. Not just people, so that has been helpful to me. It does take time though to build a PLN on Twitter.

    1. Thank you Katie. And thank you to everyone for your encouragement. I'm still working on it so I just know it will get better.

  6. I am so glad you posted this because I was (still am) very overwhelmed by my experience. I don't know when to # and when to use @, I was able to rely on a fellow teacher who is a techie (Krissy Venosdale), I followed alot of people that she does as I know they will have the same interests as me. I think it is like anything new, you've just got to keep playing around with it until it clicks. Hopefully it gets easier for all of us!
